Recently, I bought a second pen for my iPad with the goal of having an immediate backup: if one’s battery runs out during use, just grab the other while the first one charges. The new choice was the ESR 6C006 Geo Digital Pencil, a model with excellent build quality, USB-C charging, and native integration with Apple’s Find My network.
Everything seemed perfect, until I ran into a frustrating detail: this pen does not automatically shut off after a period of inactivity (auto shutoff or sleep mode). If you don’t remember to turn it off manually by holding the top button for two seconds, it will continue to drain the battery.
Since the idea was to optimize my workflow, I decided to investigate whether it was possible to update or modify the firmware to add this function. Below, I share what I discovered about the architecture of this device and the real reason for this limitation.

Why Doesn’t the ESR Geo Digital Pencil Have Auto-Shutoff?
Before classifying this as a bug or a manufacturer’s error, I went to analyze the device’s technical documentation. Model 6C006 was FCC certified in December 2024 (ID 2APEW-6C006) by Electronic Silk Road Tech Co., Ltd. It operates on the 2.4 GHz Bluetooth standard.
Upon reading the manual, there is no mention of sleep mode, stand-by, or automatic shutoff. The curious thing is that another model from the same brand, the 6C004 Digital Pencil Pro, clearly states in its manual that it enters stand-by after 5 minutes of inactivity. This means the manufacturer possesses the technology but chose not to include it in the 6C006.
The real reason: Integration with Apple Find My. For tracking via the Find My network to function properly, the pen needs to emit a constant Bluetooth signal. It must always be “visible” to surrounding Apple devices. A device that enters sleep mode to save battery loses the ability to be tracked. ESR made a clear trade-off: sacrificing battery autonomy at rest to ensure security against loss.
Whether this was the best design choice is debatable. For a use scenario focused on productivity at home or in the office, continuous tracking might be less useful than intelligent power management.

Is It Possible to Modify the Firmware of the ESR 6C006?
The main question of my investigation was to find out if it was possible to inject a custom auto shutoff. The short and direct answer is: no.
Here are the main technical roadblocks that make this modification unfeasible:
- Lack of public tools: ESR does not provide OTA (over-the-air) updates, does not have an advanced management application, and does not provide firmware files for download. The electrical schematics registered with the FCC are under permanent confidentiality at the manufacturer’s request.
- Locked Bluetooth chips: Devices in this segment typically use chips from manufacturers like Nordic Semiconductor, Telink, or Dialog. They leave the factory with flash memory protection activated. Without developer cryptographic keys, attempting to force read or write to memory usually results in “bricking” (rendering useless) the device.
- Find My Network (FNA) Certification: Apple’s accessory program is rigorous and certifies an exact combination of hardware and firmware. Any unauthorized alteration to the firmware would break the digital signature, preventing the pen from authenticating to the Apple network — which would nullify its main market differentiator.
- Inaccessible hardware: Even if it were possible to find JTAG or SWD ports on the circuit board, the pen’s cylindrical and sealed format makes physical disassembly almost impossible without causing permanent damage to the casing. The manual itself explicitly warns: “Do not disassemble or modify the product”.
Practical Solutions for Daily Use
If you are in the same situation, dealing with the ESR 6C006 battery draining by itself in its case, the real alternatives focus on habit adaptation:
- Develop the habit of manual shutoff: It’s just two seconds holding the power button. To make it easier, establish a physical trigger: the act of putting the pen in its case or attaching it magnetically to the iPad should be the reminder to turn it off.
- Ultra-fast charging: The advantage of this model is its rapid recharge. The 6C006 goes from 0% to 100% in about 20 to 30 minutes via USB-C, delivering approximately 12 hours of use. Even if you forget to turn it off and it dies overnight, connecting it for a few minutes before starting work already ensures enough charge for hours of note-taking.
Is It Worth It?
My plan to have a secondary stylus remains valid. Aside from the absence of sleep mode, the ESR 6C006 Geo Digital Pencil is an excellent tool: it has fast charging, good quality materials, a USB-C port, and for those who are forgetful with physical objects, Find My is unbeatable.
The irony of the situation is that I bought a second pen so I wouldn’t have to manage batteries, and now I need to remember to turn off an extra device.
